Adaptive leadership is essential in times of crisis, especially during a pandemic.
The pillars of adaptive leadership are in short:
-Anticipation: understanding future events and trends
-Articulation: construction of targeted actions
-Adaptation: continuous learning to give the necessary answers
-Responsibility: accountability, transparency and clear decision-making processes
In addition to these, however, HBR identifies 4 other fundamental principles to keep an eye on especially in the period of spread of Covid-19.
1) Ensure evidence-based learning and adaptation
adaptive leadership must continually change its interventions and decisions
2) Stress test underlying theories, assumptions and beliefs
It is important to create models to anticipate scenarios in order to be able to address any critical issues.
3) Simplify the deliberative decision-making process
COVID-19 data is constantly changing, and our decisions must change with the same speed.
4) Streghten transparency, inclusion and responsibility
People have had to change habits, and various changes in behavior have impacted business, society, etc. Adaptive leaders need to identify these behaviors and try to identify new opportunities.
5) Mobilize collective action
The spread of this pandemic is not only a health crisis, but also a social and political one. Collaboration between different groups and business areas is no longer an option, but a necessity.
The pandemic, we all hope, is a passing thing, but the decisions we make today will have important repercussions for the future, so effective leadership is the only way to counteract the harmful effects of Covid-19.
